Dual Shaman are brothers Vio and Dacian, a Romanian live act at the heavier end of techno saturated with elements of industrial, electro and IDM.
Dual Shaman are Viorel Mureșan and Dacian Lazăr, two brothers from Transylvania who have spent close to two decades making electronic music for labels across Europe. Their first records appeared in 2007 on 3LHR, a label run by fellow Transylvanians from Deva, continuing with Wide Angle Recordings and Manual Music, followed by EPs on Wolfskuil Ltd, Cinematique and Liar’s imprint Tessier-Ashpool, where the 2015 EP Akathist marked a turn towards what the label called “non-sedentary analogue techno jams, re-assembled with devotional precision in the studio.”
In 2018 their debut album Expiati became the first release on Drastic Arts, the label founded by Liar as the successor to Tessier-Ashpool. DJ Mag premiered the track “Nar Maqam”, and The Ransom Note described the album as drawing “from techno, electro, acid and UK hardcore, with one eye on the past and both feet planted in the future.”
Alongside the records the brothers run ShamanStems, a sound design label focusing on industrial percussion, cinematic textures, post-punk and jungle. Their sound design credits include work for Roland, Elektron, Sony and Sample Magic, and co-writing for Virgin EMI.
On stage the set is a live hardware performance: original material only, played on Elektron drum machines and grooveboxes with additional controllers and altered in real time. It runs between 137 and 142 BPM for ninety minutes, built as one continuous arc.
